Bicentennial Citations Presentation by

Senator Harold F. Mowery, Jr.

June 25, 2000

On June 25, 2000, the Honorable Senator Harold F. Mowery, Jr. presented the congregation with a citation on behalf of the Senate of Pennsylvania, recognizing the 200th anniversary of the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church. Senator Mowery also presented a citation for the bicentennial anniversary on behalf of state Representative Jerry L. Nailor and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Rev. John Ile accepted the citations for the congregation.

The Senate of Pennsylvania citation reads as follows:

Whereas, The Shiremanstown United Methodist Church is celebrating the momentous occasion of its two hundredth anniversary; and

Whereas, Established on March 24, 1800, the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church originally began on the Shopp Farm, which was owned by Johannes and Anna Shopp. Throughout the years, the church has provided a sanctuary for those in need and also expanded its services to include an all-purpose building, which was completed in 1999. The church has provided spiritual strength as well as compassionate assistance for residents of the Shiremanstown community, exhibiting a tangible example of its teachings during its two hundred-year existence; and

Whereas, throughout its glorious history, the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church has been blessed with a succession of pastors whose guidance and leadership have helped it to grow and flourish, as well as members whose faithfulness and devotion to God have made it an inspiring presence in the community. The church is presently following the spiritual guidance of the Reverend John Ile.

Now therefore, the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania rejoices with the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church as it recommits itself to the spiritual ideals and traditions which have sustained if for two hundred years; offers best wishes for continued services to God and humanity;

And directs that a copy of this document, sponsored by Senator Harold F. Mowery, Jr., be transmitted to the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, 125 East Main Street, Shiremanstown, Pennsylvania.

The House of Representatives of Pennsylvania citation reads:

Whereas, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is always pleased to acknowledge those revered places of religious worship which contribute to the well-being of their communities and ultimately to all the people of this great Commonwealth; and

Whereas, the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, established on March 24, 1800, is being honored upon this momentous occasion of its two hundredth anniversary; and

Whereas, Presently following the spiritual guidance of the Reverend John Ile, the members of the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church have had a long history of service to God and their fellowman. The church has been blessed with pastors and lay people who have been devoted to faithful leadership and, together with its members, a commitment to living out their lives in a manner that gives testimony to their spiritual beliefs. Their faith, determination, generosity and stewardship have enabled the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church to become a vital and inspiring presence in the community.

Now therefore, the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania heartily congratulates the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church upon the joyous celebration of its two hundredth anniversary; offers best wishes for continued exemplary spiritual and humanitarian service in the years to come;

And directs that a copy of this citation, sponsored by the Honorable Jerry L. Nailor on June 22, 2000, be transmitted to the Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, 125 East Main Street, Shiremanstown, Pennsylvania 17011.
